Recently a teacher called in to a radio talk show and informed us that history was being removed from school curricula. It seems that history is being sacrificed for political agenda. I thought, how sad. Now our kids are going to be more detached than ever from their heritage. But then, years ago, when I was in school (and I am a grandmother), the history books were boring anyway. Moreover, they were loaded with falsehoods. It is past time that we parents and grandparents reclaim our rightful role as conveyers of our heritage and values to our children, and not just the young ones. Young adults have also been deprived of facts about the epic heroes in our heritage. Most of the great epic heroes were taught privately or at home, anyway. And some very great brains were kicked out of school.
Sir C. Y. Twombly was born in 1928 in Lexington, Virginia, the United States. Twombly studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1947-49); the Art Students League, New York (1950-51); and Black Mountain College in North Carolina (1951-52). During mid 1950s, Twombly received a grant from Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. He traveled to Europe and Africa thereof. During his travels, Twombly found prominence among some veteran artists working in New York, including the likes of Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. In 1959, Twombly settled down forever in Italy. He held several one-man international exhibitions and was especially appreciated in both, Europe and America.
There are two kinds of history, the documented and the undocumented. These two differs on the kind of approach from people. Documented histories are seen on books, libraries and other medium whereas the undocumented are those events that have no evidence like storytelling, legends and more.
No matter what country you live in, millions of patriotic men and women before you made sacrifices so you can enjoy a better life. Every time you see a flag, let it inspire you to vote, conserve energy or resources, or volunteer. Your country will be made stronger for the generations who follow you.
So, Parents, as teachers of the rising generation, how do you make history relevant? As exciting as these stories are, if we don’t learn how to apply them to our day, then we can’t be the epic heroes we need to be, and rescue our sacred and endangered heritage. We’ve got to think!
